February, 2021.- The existence of four Cuban vaccine candidates against the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, which causes the Covid-19 disease, is due to the forecast of the historic leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro Ruz, who on January 15 of 1960 he assured: “The future of our country must necessarily be a future of men of science, it must be a future of men of thought …”
Fidel argued in a memorable ceremony held by the Cuban Speleological Society at the Academy of Sciences that “it is precisely what we are sowing the most; What we are sowing the most are opportunities for intelligence; since a very considerable part of our people did not have access to culture or science, a majority of our people ”.
Subsequently, the Cuban statesman, on December 9, 1981, highlighted the potential of the largest of the Antilles to be at the forefront in the world in Medicine and turn the Island into a universal power.
It happened at the closing of the V Congress of the Union of Health Workers, held in the Main Theater of Camagüey, when the Commander-in-Chief shared the objectives with the delegates, guests and the entire Cuban people:
“I think that if we are making a great effort to create universities and create the material base, we must pay special attention to the quality with which our doctors are being trained. I believe that we must be very open-minded and have very fresh information on all the problems of Medicine in the world, make contacts with all those countries that are more advanced in this or another branch of Medicine.
Fidel’s thought became a reality early on with the development of important scientific institutions, the creation of the Scientific Pole, and the promotion of biotechnology as a fundamental sector for the health of the Cuban people and the rise of its economy.
In addition, in the largest of the Antilles, the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB) was inaugurated in 1986, as well as different scientific entities such as the Center for the Production of Laboratory Animals (CENPALAB), the National Center for Biopreparations (BIOCEN) and the Immunoassay Center, among many others.
Fidel on January 15, 1960 declared: “How many minds have been wasted in that forgetfulness! How many intelligences have been lost! Intelligences that today will be incorporated into the life of your country; intelligences that today will be incorporated into culture and science, because for that we are turning fortresses into schools; for that we are building school cities; for that we are filling the Island with teachers, so that in the future the country can count on a brilliant plethora of men of thought, researchers and scientists ”.
61 years after the speech of the historical leader of the Revolution, Cuban scientists announced to President Miguel Díaz-Canel the production of the first batch of 150,000 Sovereign 02 vaccines against the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, which causes the Covid-19 disease. that already leaves more than 2.3 million dead in the world.
Soberana 02 is one of the four vaccine candidates developed by Cuba in the context of the fight against the pandemic; the most advanced on the island against the epidemic and the first Latin American candidate to reach that stage, which includes almost 900 volunteers. It is a conjugate vaccine, in which the virus antigen, the receptor-binding domain (RBD), is chemically bound to tetanus toxoid.
The director general of the Finlay Vaccine Institute, Vicente Vérez, said that Soberana 02 is already being produced on a large scale to start phase III of the clinical trials next March.
According to the Latin American news agency Prensa Latina, the second anti-Covid-19 candidate of the scientific institution is in expanded phase II, which shows great security and a powerful immune response. “It induces long-term memory of that immune response that, in addition to producing antibodies, makes them last,” said Vérez in other information on the results of the product.
Cuba intends to produce 100 million doses of the Sovereign 02 vaccine against Covid-19, in order to satisfy the need of the country and also of other nations interested in the injectable. (Translated by Linet Acuña Quilez)
