June, 2020.- As a consequence of the new coronavirus, the traditional festivities of San Juan Camagüeyano in 2020 (from June 24 to 29), were characterized by their virtual nature, where more than 14 thousand 400 participants gave their opinions and interacted on the event that emerged more than three centuries ago in the agramontina province, more than 570 kilometers east of Havana.

It is a new experience that allowed inhabitants of the province of Camagüey, residents in the territory or in other cities of the world to express their criteria and exchange with specialists and researchers of those festivals that also have a carnival hue.

With the prism that the isolation by the Covid-19 does not mean rupture of the culture, which does not stop, but rather reinvents itself, more than 900 opinions originated and it was advocated that the San Juan Camagüeyano be proposed as Heritage of the Cuban Nation, for its autonomous essence not only for the City of Tinajones but in the entire province.

The concerns and suggestions were clarified, during the digital debate forum, by two personalities: the master of science. Reynaldo Echemendía Estrada, director of the Ballet Folclórico de Camagüey, and Fernando Crespo Baró, researcher at the Office of the City Historian. The Provincial Director of Culture Tamira González Jiménez also appeared.

The San Juan dates back to the livestock activity of Port-au-Prince, said historian Fernando Crespo, while Echemendía emphasized the originality of the unique celebrations of its kind in Cuba.

In the words to the digital forum, the Doctor of Science in Art Teresa Bustillo Martínez expressed that culture “is reinvented by every human being in the inescapable attempt to survive. We all reinvent it because in it, and only in it, we can find our deep-rooted creeds of yesterday and the impatient hopes of tomorrow ”.

“Culture, he added, lives in the same polarities and tensions as the existence of men: in their parties and in their deaths, in their loaves and their miseries, in their ecstasy and in their heartbreak. Culture is the color and texture of an unfinished fabric; it is that echo chamber where infinite sounds reverberate ”. (Author’s photos).(Translated by Linet Acuña Quilez)

La cultura la reinventamos todos porque en ella, y solo en ella, caben nuestros raigales credos de ayer y las impacientes esperanzas de mañana
